Summit Men – The “MANdate”

PLEASE NOTE

On an increasing basis, we’re looking to share updates across the Network that give news, ministry ideas, gospel progress, church planting progress, and of course we’re always looking for encouragement, support, and challenge in this great work God has called us to. We will be pursuing many across the Network for these updates but it goes both ways too! If you are a Crossway leader and would like to get an update published, please contact Clark Richardson here on the Servant Team Page. Thanks!

Enjoy Crossway’s latest update from Ben Sansburn and the pastors at Summit Christian Fellowship in Tacoma, Washington. Pastor Ben writes:

What is a man? In our cultural moment, that’s a loaded question. And it’s a question our culture has become less and less certain how to answer. From toxic masculinity to gender fluidity, there’s a grab-bag of ideas out there for what manhood is all about, and it’s left many men adrift in a sea of changing definitions and directives. But as changeable and diverse as our culture’s answers to the manhood question are, the Bible’s answer is equally clear and compelling. Men were created with a high calling. They were made for more than many men know or experience. Men have a mandate!

From toxic masculinity to gender fluidity, there’s a grab-bag of ideas out there for what manhood is all about, and it’s left many men adrift in a sea of changing definitions and directives.

Our heart is to see men in the Pacific Northwest know and live their biblical mandate. Alongside another church in our city (Gospel Life Church) we’ve partnered in an initiative called “The MANdate”. The idea is simple. Gather men on a Saturday morning at a central location, have them worship Jesus together, and then remind them of their calling. Don’t guilt them for dropping the ball. Don’t yell at them for how they’ve failed. Instead, remind them that Jesus died for failures and invite them into something better. Something deeper. Something higher.

We’re using Richard Philipps book, The Masculine Mandate as a springboard and we encourage men to form small groups with one another to meet at least once between months.

The MANdate happens once a month and our two churches share teaching and leadership responsibilities. Over one hundred men came our first month. They brought their own lawn chairs and morning coffees and packed themselves into a sweaty wrestling gym run by Reality Sports. It’s the start of something. D.L. Moody famously said, “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man, fully devoted to him.”

We opened our first month with those words and plan to repeat them each time we gather. We made just a couple small changes: “The Pacific Northwest has yet to see what God can do with MEN – fully devoted to him.”

Please pray for our men to lead and love like Jesus and please pray for Summit, Gospel Life Church, Tacoma Washington and the Pacific Northwest!
